New B.C. Building Code Measures
In 2013, the Building and Safety Standards Branch consulted with the BC Lung Association (BCLA), as well as industry stakeholders to inform improvements to the existing BC Building Code regulations for radon.
The following main events occurred during 2013 and 2014:
- BCLA partnered with the City of Castlegar to test the effectiveness of various home radon mitigation systems.
- Results from testing indicated current regulations for radon were insufficient to adequately protect building occupants from unsafe levels of radon.
- From the results of BCLA’s mitigation testing the BC Building Code revised its radon regulations to require a radon vent pipe that extends from beneath the slab of a home, up the building, and vents safely to the outdoors.
