A collaboration project between the BC Lung Association and the Aboriginal Housing Society of Prince George (AHSPG) has set the bar for cost-effective radon testing and mitigation in affordable housing.
The AHSPG owns and operates affordable housing in the Prince George area and were a core participant in Canada's largest ever community-wide radon testing study in 2014, conducted by the BC Lung Association.
"We are grateful for the AHSPG and the BC Lung Association's groundwork," said David Silva, Executive Director of the Aboriginal Housing Management Association, the provincial umbrella organization for Aboriginal housing. "We now have a clear understanding of how to apply radon testing and mitigation in affordable housing, as well as average project costs. This is hugely valuable as we prepare to take action on radon in our Aboriginal housing province-wide."
The BC Lung Association met with BC Hydro to provide information on what radon is, how to test, mitigation options, and how building upgrades are a great time to consider protection from soil gases, such as radon, the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
They agreed testing for radon is an important step to help protect occupant health and safety. Under their Home Renovation Rebate Program, BC Hydro now asks homeowners to consider testing for radon and refers them to our RadonAware resource. "If you're going to be planning a renovation, it's the perfect time to consider radon testing," said Margo Longland, Senior BC Hydro Program Manager in Residential Marketing.
The Canadian Home Builders Association of BC (CHBA BC) represents more than 1,600 members from regions throughout the province of British Columbia and from every area of the housing industry in the province.
"For our members - BC home builders and contractors - part of providing the highest quality of service to customers requires they understand radon and the risk it poses to people's health. We're helping make that happen by collaborating with the BC Lung Association," said Neil Moody, CEO of the CHBA BA. "We educate members on new building code requirements that aim to reduce radon exposure and we encourage our members to speak to customers about radon testing and mitigation options."
